OAM

Operations, administration and management, or operations, administration and maintenance (OA&M or OAM)
is a general term used to describe a set of functions to detect the network faults and measure the network
performance. They can be processes, activities, tools and standards involved with operating, administering,
managing and maintaining a system. It is more commonly used in the context of computer networks or
computer hardware.

In particular, Ethernet operations, administration and maintenance (EOAM) refers to protocols for installing,
monitoring, and troubleshooting Ethernet metropolitan area networks (MANs) and Ethernet WANs. It relies
on a new, optional sub layer in the data link layer of the Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) model. The OAM
features covered by this protocol are discovery, link monitoring, remote fault detection, and remote loopback.
